Minicourse in Surgical Oncology for Veterinary Practitioners 2009 Rydges Port Macquarie, Sunday September 20, 2009 OR Crowne Plaza Coogee Beach, Sunday September Sept 27, 2009 In 2009 we are proud to present an international guest speaker, Dr. Robert J. McCarthy, DVM, Dip ACVS, for a Minicourse in Surgical Oncology. This program will provide 6 structured CPD units. Topics include "Oncologic surgery: challenging cases, surgical solutions", "Recent advances in the management of intraoperative haemorrhage- is bleeding really necessary?", "Managing the surgical wound I: Dealing with the wound that is difficult to close", "Managing the surgical wound II: Dealing with the wound that can not be closed", and "Minimally invasive oncologic surgery: Can diagnosis and treatment of cancer be accomplished with less pain?". Rob gained his veterinary degree from Tufts University in 1983, and trained as an intern and resident at Minnesota State University to gain his Masters degree and Board certification by the American College of Veterinary Surgeons in 1992. Since then he has worked as a specialist surgeon in private practice, and in academia at Louisiana State University and more recently at Tufts University where he is an Adjunct Professor in Clinical Sciences. He also owns a specialist surgery practice serving the central Massachusetts area. At Tufts he was the driving force behind developing laparoscopic surgery. His unique and diverse background positions him perfectly to know the importance—and challenges—of excellent oncologic surgery to practicing veterinarians. Rob has spoken at international meetings as well as in the USA, but this will be his first trip to Australia. To maximize the learning opportunity, the Minicourse will be offered twice at 2 separate venues:
